Registration and desexing

Registering a cat or dog as a breeding animal must be done at your local council.

Breeders must give their council documentation to prove that the animal qualifies for the recognised breeding animal registration fee. This allows breeders to avoid paying the additional fee for non-desexed dogs over 6 months of age and the annual permit fee for non-desexed cats over 4 months of age.

Documentation includes:

  • proof of current membership as a breeder member of a recognised breeder body
  • verification that the cat or dog is of a breed accepted by the recognised breeder body
  • a signed statement by the member that the cat or dog is kept for breeding purposes.
  1. 1. Keep a litter pet on the NSW Pet Registry

If you choose to keep a litter pet, once they are over 8 weeks old and microchipped you can add them to your pets.

Select the pet you would like to keep, and in their timeline click ‘Keep pet’. They will now appear on your ‘My pets’ page.

  2. 2. Register your pet as a breeding cat or dog

Registration must be completed at council. Take a completed Registration R2 form along with additional documentation to prove that the animal qualifies as a recognised breeding animal.

  3. 3. Registration processed by local council

Once your documentation has been received and verified by council, and registration payment has been made, you will be exempt from fees for owning a non-desexed pet.
