The NSW Government has introduced reforms to create more vibrant public spaces and increase economic opportunity. Mutual Recognition will help achieve this by reducing red tape and streamlining approval processes.
Commencing in September 2025, the new Mutual Recognition Scheme for local approvals is now available to all NSW councils and holders of eligible approvals.
Introduced through amendments to the Local Government Act 1993 (the Act) and the Local Government (General) Regulation 2021, the Mutual Recognition Scheme provides councils with new legislative powers to recognise approvals issued by other councils under Parts D and F7 of Section 68 of Act. This will make it easier for businesses such as mobile food vendors, buskers, outdoor fitness trainers, coffee carts and other mobile activities to operate across multiple council areas.
Mutual Recognition simplifies approvals and reduces the regulatory red tape associated with duplicate approvals. These reforms reduce administrative burden on councils, encourage economic activity for businesses and deliver more vibrant public spaces and more diversity for the community.
